Planning a metal splashback: measuring, cut-outs and fitting
Share
A patinated metal splashback is one of the simplest ways to transform a kitchen. A little planning before you order makes fitting straightforward.
1. Measure, then allow for tolerance
Measure the space carefully, then allow a 2mm gap between the edge of the metal and any surface it meets, such as worktops, walls and units. This gives you room to fit the panel without forcing it.
2. Check the maximum sizes
Brass panels can be made up to 3000 × 1000mm and copper up to 2000 × 1000mm. Larger sheets are sometimes available, and we'll check with the mill when you order. For bigger walls, we'll help you plan where the joins fall.
3. Plan your cut-outs
We can cut out for sockets, switches, hobs, sinks and taps. Send us a drawing showing the position and size of each cut-out, measured from the edges of the panel.
4. Choose your finish
Most finishes are lacquered as standard, which keeps the patina close to how it arrives. Choose oiled and waxed if you'd like it to keep evolving. Verdigris finishes are always oiled and waxed.
5. Fixing
Use a grab adhesive and silicone sealant that is non-corrosive and suitable for metal. We recommend Hodgson's Silfix U9 adhesive, and any colour-matched sealant must be suitable for copper and brass. Always check the product data sheet.
6. Allow time
Manufacture and delivery take 4–5 weeks. Folded or pressed panels, or panels on a substrate, add at least 2 weeks. If you'd like us to measure and install, allow 6–8 weeks.
